Anxiety Counseling in Maysville, KY

If you are stuck in your thoughts and opting out of your life,
Bryan Purcell Counseling can help you find relief.

Anxiety can make life more challenging than it already is. You do not have to struggle alone.

So many things are competing for your time, attention, and energy. The pressure to meet life’s demands can seem incredibly overwhelming. The expectations can seem impossible to meet. Sure, you are thankful for the blessings in your life. You try to be positive. But the anxiety lingers. You feel tension inside your body, and you feel coiled inside. You can’t escape the thought that something is wrong or is going to go wrong. Then, the guilt starts. You think to yourself, “What’s wrong with me? I shouldn’t be this worked up. Everyone else seems to have it all together.” If you are a person of faith, you might think, “I’m not a good enough Christian.” And you wonder if it will always be this way.

You don’t have to face anxiety alone. You can move from feeling trapped by endless thinking and avoidance to being more present and connected to the things that matter to you. Seeking anxiety help is a good start.

Common Symptoms Of Anxiety

Anxiety shows up differently for everyone. For some, it is overpreparing for a meeting, sermon, or presentation or repeatedly running through past or future conversations in your mind. For others, anxiety might involve a short temper or insomnia. One can feel anxious about feeling anxious, even to the point of panic. You can feel sick to your stomach, experience headaches, and avoid people and relationships. You’re tired and want it to stop.

How Does Anxiety Work?

The harsh reality is that anxiety is normal and plays an essential role in our lives. Without anxiety, we would never accomplish anything. Anxiety reminds us what’s important and helps us to take action. At its most basic level, anxiety is a natural human response to danger, stressful situations, and uncertainty.

One of the primary functions of the brain is to scan for anything that can hurt us, whether physical, emotional, or social. When the brain perceives a threat, it releases a chain reaction of chemicals throughout the body—this is anxiety and part of being human. How anxiety is triggered and what it feels like can be different for any given person. When anxiety lingers, or it shows up in everyday situations, it’s no longer helpful.

What Makes Anxiety Problematic?

Most of the clients I work with experience manageable, low levels of anxiety, which increase and decrease based on stress levels. A significant event often triggers unbearable anxiety. The reaction (or response) often prolongs the unwanted anxious sensations in our bodies, which can start a vicious cycle.

It’s not your fault. Both anxiety and responses to get rid of (“cope”) anxiety are perfectly normal. However, when we try to “fight off” anxiety, we tend to experience more anxiety, not less. It isn’t long before we avoid anything and everything that could potentially trigger or worsen anxiety, which takes us away from our values and life experiences that matter most.

There are specific ways of responding to anxiety that diffuse and disarm the struggle against it—unfortunately, these skills are rarely taught or promoted. We live in a culture that sets us up perfectly to enter the trap of struggling against anxiety and ourselves. Our society screams, “Get happy and stay happy!” Our culture constantly reinforces growth, performance, and achievement. It goes against the culture to distance ourselves from anxiety.

What's Holding You Back From Anxiety Counseling In Maysville, KY?

I find that among the clients I work with, high achievers and Christian clients, the root of anxiety is found in trying to prove their worth and value. Sometimes, they’re trying to prove their worth to God and others. Often, they’re trying to prove it to themselves. This can look like trying to ensure all the boxes are checked for themselves and their family, maintaining an extra busy schedule, or striving for more achievements.

Self-worth based on what you do or don’t do can only last so long before it falls apart, leading to an exhausting and endless cycle of trying to make up for imperfections. Clients often say they feel guilty and ashamed no matter what they try - they can’t afford to allow themselves to be human for fear of judgment and rejection. Still, managing everyone’s impression of them (including themselves) is exhausting and pressure-filled. This is where the work in counseling goes further to help you experience meaningful change.

Anxiety doesn’t have to control your life the way it does right now. I’d love to help you live a life in which anxiety no longer calls the shots.

Let’s Work Together!

When you call or email to schedule your first appointment, we will briefly discuss what you seek from counseling, and I will answer initial questions about your first visit.  This will not resemble what counseling is actually like with me. It’s an opportunity to discuss how to get started.

In the first session, we will get to know each other more, I will ask questions about your primary challenges and counseling goals, and I will answer any questions you have about your counseling experience. Follow-up sessions typically occur weekly, and we can adjust the frequency of your visits after some time.

You don’t have to go through your life struggles alone.
